In spring 2018, the environmental association
One Earth – One Ocean
started the plastic waste cleaning, recycling and environmental education project in Cambodia.

To approach the goal “freeing plastic waste from the Mekong River, and in the end to avoid plastic waste entering to the Sea.“
COMPED – the Cambodian Education and Waste Management Organization is our implement partner.

2024, our project is placed in four locations, to clean and free plastic waste from the rivers which connected to the Mekong River and in the end to avoid plastic waste entering to the Sea like

+ Sangke River in the City Battambang
+ Mekong, Basac and Tonle Sab River in Phnom Penh
+ Mekong River in the city Kampong Cham and
+ Mekong River in the city Kratie.

OEOO and COMPED, we are ready for extent more cleanup cells and for sure ready also to work with any other stakeholders, who work in the same field and with the same goal.

Waste Cleanup, Treatment and Recycling

As the name of the project, one of the important activities of the project is waste collection, cleanup and treatment, to remove plastic waste from the Sangke River in Battambang City, the Mekong, Tonle Sab, and Tonle Basac in Phnom Penh and Takmao City, the Mekong in Kampong Cham and Kratie city,  and treat it in different steps:

Step 1: cleanup work

In the morning time our teams go and collect all kind of waste along the target locations and transfer it to the own treatment facility. The tools which are used for the waste collection and transport are boats. Seehamster, TukTuk, Truck…etc.

Total waste collected amount: 656,033.09 Kg

Step 2: waste treatment

At the treatment plant, the collected plastic waste need be sorted out from the other waste and separated in recyclable and non-recyclable plastic. The plastic waste from the targe location is dirty, and is therefore almost not-recyclable.

PW collected amount: 422,939.52 Kg

Step 3: prepare PW as thermal resource

The collected non-recyclable plastic needs to be cleaned and dried under the sun, before it can be used as thermal resource in the end pip of environment friendly and sound of waste management at the Chip Mong INSEE Cement fabric in Kampot.

PW is used as thermal resource: 286,521.62 Kg
